How Did We Do on Our 2010 Predictions? A Look Back as We Approach 2020

This is the time of year for predictions and, as we approach a new decade, we thought we’d take a look back at the last decade to see how well the predictions we made then have held up. Here’s what we said then, where we are now and what we predict for 2020.

Our 2010 Predictions

  • Twitter will fizzle. Nope. Still going strong despite a number of recent changes that have been frustrating to social media managers like us.
  • We’ll still be engaged in healthy debate over health care reform. Yes!
  • The economy will see a slow, but steady, revival, fueled primarily by innovative entrepreneurs and start-ups. Yes!
  • Talk about the end of the world in 2012 will be ramping up. This seems to be an evergreen prediction!
  • Before year-end the major media outlets will already be printing the “best of” and “who died in” 2010 lists. Yes!
  • The Packers will win the Super Bowl – the Vikings won’t (couldn’t resist – born and raised in good-old Wisconsin). Well, the Vikings haven’t, but we got this one right as well. The Pack won in 2011!
  • Brett Favre will retire – for real. Yeah, right… Yes, he finally did.

We didn’t do too bad (if we get the benefit of an entire decade to look back on. So, here we’ll take a look at some predictions for 2020.

Our 2020 Predictions

  • Voice search will continue to be a very big deal.
  • Stringent SEO adherence will give way to a more human, conversational and long-tail approach. Google’s new BERT algorithm virtually guarantees it.
  • Demand for high-quality, original content will continue to run high across all industries.
  • AI and machine learning will make its way even deeper into our everyday lives and workplaces. We think that’s a good thing!
  • Gen Z will fully emerge as the next generation to pick on.
  • The opportunity of a virtual experience with virtually everything will drive engagement with more real-world, face-to-face, in-person interactions.
  • And, once again we can’t resist: The Packers will win the Super Bowl! Go Pack!
